A dark inheritance
Felix Ashe is sure of only one thing. In thirty days, on his eighteenth birthday, he will die. The gruesome deaths of his three brothers have convinced Felix that he and his family are under a terrible curse – one doomed to stop anyone inheriting his family’s incredibly fortune.
When an opportunity to break the curse appears to present itself, it’s impossible not to heed its dark call. And bound to everything is a deadly secret society who will either be Felix’s downfall … or his one chance at redemption.
When I was first introduced to the world of A Dark Inheritance I was thrilled - A 1920’s setting ,a new magic system to explore, and the mysterious Imperious Mortem. What’s not to love?
I loved the magic system and how it it built in the age old idea of an eye for an eye .It was really effective in terms of pacing the story as the main character Felix only has 30 days left to live (as pointed out by each of the chapter headings) and I enjoyed how it forces Felix to piece together his own fate based of scraps of information he gains. However I would have liked for the system to fleshed out more especially as this feels glazed over in later parts of the book.
I also found this a problem in later parts of the book, as a lot of the resolving action is glazed over or missed entirely which retracts from the overall satisfaction of the end of the book.
I did thoroughly enjoy the portrayal of Felix and his anxiety ,as personally I found it very believable (although this plot point was ignore in later parts of the book). Most of the characters where pretty detailed although again the love interest felt hollow and was just there to move the plot along.
Finally, the aspects of the 1920’s era was enjoyable but it wasn’t embedded enough into the story ,as it could have been set in the present day.
Overall - good concept ,average writing
