The knife of never letting go
Gritty.Bone-chilling.Addictive.Those are a few of the words racing through the privacy of my brain (which is unfortunately less than I can say for our protagonist Todd)Today we will begin to explore the fresh dystopian world of the New World as we watch Todd (and his dog Manchee)begin to navigate it.
Todd Hewitt is the only boy in a town of men. Ever since the settlers were infected with the Noise germ, Todd can hear everything the men think, and they hear everything he thinks. Todd is just a month away from becoming a man, but in the midst of the cacophony, he knows that the town is hiding something from him -something so awful Todd is forced to flee with only his dog, whose simple, loyal voice he hears too. With hostile men from the town in pursuit, the two stumble upon a strange and eerily silent creature: a girl. Who is she? Why wasn't she killed by the germ like all the females on New World? Propelled by Todd's gritty narration, readers are in for a white-knuckle journey in which a boy on the cusp of manhood must unlearn everything he knows in order to figure out who he truly is.-Knife of never letting go blurb
When I was first recommended this book, I was really unsure about wether I would enjoy it .I mean don’t get me wrong I really enjoy the dystopian genre but I genuinely thought that this would just be another copy and paste of every other book .
I was so wrong.
The plot was an intense roller coaster that really made me consider how we interact with people and how we share information. And what’s more it was really enjoyable- there wasn’t one section where I thought the page dragged or the plot was unnecessary.
This was futher helped by the complex character creation. It would have been ridiculously easy to make our main character Todd but incredibly nieve but instead ,morally he is a very complex character. We get to not only see how society shapes Todd and how he navigates both the good and the bad of this but we also get to consider how we are selves are shaped by society and what we are told (or not told) about it.This makes it such an engaging book as it is both escapist while also commenting on society(which I believe is especially vital at this time)
As well as this the book is soooo well written from its engaging writing style to some parts of the book that absolutely crushed me emotionally.Honestly,I don’t ever think I’ve been so involved or cried so much at a book before this .I truly believe that this book is destined to become a modern classic.
