Ruin and rising book review

The Darkling rules Ravka from his shadow throne.

Now the nation's fate rests with a broken Sun Summoner, a disgraced tracker, and the shattered remnants of a once-great magical army.

Deep in an ancient network of tunnels and caverns, a weakened Alina must submit to the dubious protection of the Apparat and the zealots who worship her as a Saint. Yet her plans lie elsewhere, with the hunt for the elusive firebird and the hope that an outlaw prince still survives.

Alina will have to forge new alliances and put aside old rivalries as she and Mal race to find the last of Morozova's amplifiers. But as she begins to unravel the Darkling's secrets, she reveals a past that will forever alter her understanding of the bond they share and the power she wields. The firebird is the one thing that stands between Ravka and destruction—and claiming it could cost Alina the very future she’s fighting for.

-Ruin and Rising Blurb

After what has been a very thrilling (and at times devastating book) I am glad to be reviewing the end of this trilogy.

As soon as I opened the book,I was instantly immersed in Ravka(where the main trilogy is set). One of Leigh Bardugo’s many talents and one of my favourite parts of her writing style is the depth and intricacy in  which she write both her world and her characters .It instantly makes her books enjoyable whether or not your a fantasy regular(like me)or if this is one of your first fantasy trilogy’s.

Overall, the character development in this series has been really good although I do feel like towards the end Alina’s personal development did fizzle out a bit. This may have been due to the multiple love interests in the final book intensifying but it felt like her character development was sacrificed for the overall plot.

I didn’t mind the romance in the other books but a lot of the romance with Mal felt a bit forced. Overall I don’t feel that it was necessarily bad but in comparison to the other books and other other such as six of crows it just didn’t hit the same. I felt that the book was rather repetitive of the previous ones, although it did have some plot twists, I felt that it was to similar to its predecessors.

However ,all that being said I do feel that there was still some beautiful character development, especially for some of the side characters such as Genya (David and Genya make me squeal so hard the whole book)
